HeartWood Centre’s “Taking the Lead” girls leadership program has just wrapped up in Spryfield. Over the course of five months using HeartWood’s Framework for Community Youth Development, the girls, aged 14-17, were engaged in meaningful participation through planning, organizing and decision-making. The girls explored a variety of topics including sexual health, barriers to leadership for women and girls as well as media and hyper-sexualization.
Months of dedication and hard work culminated in their community service-learning project, a day of celebrating Female Leadership in Spryfield at the Captain William Spry Centre. The event took place on Sunday July 28th and featured performances by the participants as well as information booths featuring some of the great organizations that provide services in Spryfield. The celebration also featured the launch of a t-shirt that seeks to stop gender stereotypes; the t-shirts were designed by the girls and will be for sale at our upcoming 25th Anniversary on September 26th.
We will shift our focus to Cole Harbour for the next phase of our girls leadership program. We are currently in recruitment mode, so if you know of any girls aged 14-18 interested in participating please get in touch! You can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call Eva or Nicole at 444-5885.
