This year, HeartWood is supporting groups of girls and young women through our newest program, Taking the Lead. In the spring, the HeartWood team worked for five months with a group of girls between the ages of 14 to 18 in the Spryfield area. It was a transformational experience for each girl who took part. Here are just a couple of things the girls said:
“I learned a lot about leadership and taking my own risks and choices, and that my own opinions do matter, just as much as everyone else’s.”
“We created such a healthy, safe environment where people can express themselves, and I really appreciated how we made an effort to make sure everyone’s voice was heard, since a lot of time in society that doesn’t happen. It’s usually the ones who are the loudest that get heard, but this time it’s everyone.”
You can see more of their stories in this video about Taking the Lead: http://vimeo.com/74756196 .
HeartWood is now supporting a group of girls in the Cole Harbour/Woodlawn area. Currently Taking the Lead has funding from the Status of Women Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia; however, to fully implement the program we need further contributions.
Please consider supporting the Taking the Lead program this holiday season. If you would like to make a donation in someone’s name for a work or family gift exchange, we will send a card recognizing your gift directly to the recipient. We will also send you a charitable tax receipt. Donations can be made on our website (http://heartwood.ns.ca) by simply clicking the “Donate” button on the top right of the page. You can also send a cheque to HeartWood Centre for Community Youth Development.
“Stop Gender Stereotyping” sticker, or t-shirt. These were designed by some of the girls in the program. If you would like to purchase these, please call the office (902-444-5885) or email firstname.lastname@example.org. If you would like HeartWood to mail these as a gift, please contact us no later than the 18th so Canada Post has time for delivery. An additional $5 will be added for shipping and handling.
Thank-you for your continuous support of HeartWood and the youth who participate in our programs.
Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday,
The HeartWood Team
