Since 1989, Heartwood Centre for Community Youth Development has provided a wide variety of youth engagement programs and services to thousands of youth in Nova Scotia. Our offerings have included youth leadership development programs, facilitation and engagement trainings for adults, and outdoor education and recreation programs. HeartWood pursues various funding sources to ensure that we can continue to provide as many services to youth and community as possible.
HeartWood has a strong track record of delivering successful programs that often transform a youth’s life. Our staff are highly skilled, experienced, caring and knowledgeable about working with diverse groups of youth. Youth are at a crucial point in their lives when they need support from peers and adults, but they are often met with distrust, fear, and avoidance. HeartWood believes that youth deserve a voice, and that youth and adults working together create more vibrant and caring communities.
One youth who has been impacted by HeartWood is Dave Welsford; this is an excerpt from his story:
“HeartWood is where my leadership skills began. In high school I was heading down a difficult path. The HeartWood experience helped re-shape my thinking and made me realize what was important and what I was really interested in. HeartWood helped me focus my career as well in encouraging me to attend community college for screen arts and now I’m at NSCAD doing a fine arts degree. Without HeartWood’s positive influence and supportive programming, who knows where I would be?”
Thousands of youth have been positively affected by HeartWood over the years. With your support, we can continue making a difference for youth in Nova Scotia.

HeartWood is about having a place where you belong and can be yourself while finding new opportunities to be involved in the community. A place where you feel comfortable enough to discover who you are as an individual, [and to] find and explore your passions. A place where friends become close enough to be considered family.
